Stewardship and Restoration

The Carrollton community is fortunate to call home one of the most extraordinary properties in Florida. Sitting on the shores of Biscayne Bay, El Jardin rules majestically over beautiful lawns, hammocks, sunrises and sunsets. On any spot of the property, whether by the water or high up on the ridge, one can easily be transported by a sense of wonder and beauty. As the French playwright Jean Anouilh said, “Beauty is one of the few things in the world that does not lead to doubt about God.” As Sacred Heart educators we believe that beauty opens the mind to mystery which in turns, allows for a deeper reflection into the interior life. A location such as El Jardin enjoys, is an integral part of the education of our students. As stewards of this historic property, Carrollton finds itself in the privileged position of safeguarding the legacy and the future of this treasure for our internal community and the Miami community at large.

To that end, for a number of years Carrollton has worked with the finest experts. Specialists from the International Fine Arts Conservation Studios, Inc (IFACS) have been working with Carrollton for a number of years.  IFACS, renowned for its work on Ca'd'Zan, the Mediterranean Revival Ringling residence in Sarasota, and the Edison and Ford Estates in Ft. Myers, have spent summers since 2003 meticulously analyzing, cleaning, stabilizing, repairing and restoring El Jardin. A comprehensive study of the earliest finishes brought to life the original stucco colors on the historic buildings of the estate. The choice of colors demonstrates the importance of architect Richard Kiehnel's role in what would become the color palette that George Merrick chose for Coral Gables, as well as the thematic colors for the Mediterranean Revival movement.

The stewardship of our historic properties is a never ending labor of love made easier by understanding its essential role in our Sacred Heart mission.
