Junior Shines on International Women's Day Week

Isabel Singletary
International Women’s Day, celebrated last week throughout the world, promoted as this year’s theme, “Balance for Better”.
Empowering women to use their voices for the betterment and building of community is a tenet of Sacred Heart education. We educate women for the world because by their relational nature women are effective agents of change. Well educated, compassionate, and courageous, women of the Sacred Heart promote by their very lives the balance that makes for a better world – balance of faith, intellect, community, justice and wise freedom.

Carrollton is proud that an essay on an environmental challenge facing the whole world, by one of our students and a member of the Debate team, Gabriela Garity ’20 was selected for publishing in a national publication. The New York Times Learning Network's Connections Contest challenged students to "link something they were studying in school with the world today". Gabriela Garity chose to link what they were studying in class, Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave", with an opinion piece on climate change from the Times.  The Learning Network received over 2000 submissions; 10 winners, 20 runner ups, and honorable mentions were announced. Gabriela's essay was recognized as a runner-up in this contest.  An excerpt of her essay was published in the NYT.
