On the first day of the school year, Carrollton’s Upper School welcomed back alumna Alessandra Luedeking, Class of 2013, as the guest speaker for the Convocation.

The event, centered on this year's theme of Gratitude, is an opportunity to recognize each student, faculty and staff member, and administrator in the Upper School community, and Alessandra’s journey served as a powerful example of the transformative impact of this virtue.

Introduced by Dr. Larrea, Alessandra expressed her deep appreciation for the warmth and love she felt upon returning to Carrollton. Reflecting on her time as a student, she shared how Carrollton nurtures big dreams and possibilities while candidly discussing the self-doubt she once felt about belonging to such a great institution. This uncertainty carried into her professional life, especially during her challenging first job as a sixth-grade teacher in the Bronx, NY.

In a poignant moment, Alessandra recounted how a school administrator helped her realize that perceived failure was not a measure of her worth but a stepping stone to future success. This lesson taught her that greatness lies not in perfection but in embracing limitations and trusting in the growth that comes from challenges.

Her message to Carrollton students was clear: You belong, and you are great simply because you are. She encouraged them to embrace their unique identities and bring their true selves to school every day, as their authenticity is what makes Carrollton truly great.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Alessandra Luedeking ’13 for attending the Convocation and sharing her inspiring journey with us. Her words have set a powerful tone for the school year, reminding us all of the importance of gratitude and authenticity. We are grateful for her continued connection to Carrollton and for the wisdom she imparted to our students.
