Autism Theatre Project

Autism Theatre Project

The Autism Theater Project, a non-profit production company and educational program for the youth in our community who are on the autism spectrum, was founded by Gena Sims over seven years ago.

Having a sister on the spectrum herself and witnessing the lack of services available to autistic teenagers and young adults, Sims has always had a firm conviction for making sure their voices are heard. When the pandemic hit in 2020, her passion and dream of sharing this story through film became a reality. She began writing a script for The Voice Inside alongside playwright Matteo Esposito, who is on the spectrum.

This fictional YouTube series is based on real-life accounts and acted by many of the storytellers themselves. Episodes showcase different voices and perspectives of the autism community and show how people with and without disabilities can help each other improve their lives.

Carrollton alumna Alexandra Pupo ‘22 became involved in the Autism Theater Project during her Upper School career. She spearheaded a club that eventually met weekly to give Sims insight into what high schoolers want in a television series. Pupo wrote alongside Sims and Esposito and involved students by casting them as extras in the series filmed in some of Carrollton’s classrooms.
