Carrollton Upper School Begins the 2025-2026 Academic Year with Convocation

The first day of school for Grades 7-12 began with a beautiful Carrollton tradition: Convocation. Each year, the entire Upper School community - students, faculty, staff, and administration - comes together on the first day to recognize by name every single member of our community.

This year, we were honored to welcome back alumna Hon. Kristy Nuñez ’98 as our keynote speaker. Mrs. Consuegra and our students first heard Judge Nuñez speak at the Alumnae Pin Ceremony in May, where she shared her passion for youth advocacy, her commitment to community, and her gratitude for her Sacred Heart education. It was clear then that she would be the perfect person to set the tone for this new school year, rooted in joy, connection, and community.

Judge Nuñez was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and attended Carrollton, graduating in 1998 as Student Council President. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and her law degree from St. Thomas University School of Law. Following law school, she served as an Assistant State Attorney for 13 years, prosecuting homicide cases, working in the Career Criminal and Robbery Unit, and serving in the Sexual Battery and Child Abuse Unit advocating for minor victims. Before taking the bench, she also led the Human Trafficking Unit, specializing in prosecuting sex and labor trafficking.

Beyond her legal career, Judge Nuñez co-founded Urban Promise Miami in 2010, a nonprofit serving at-risk youth and families in under-resourced communities, where she served as Board Chair for 11 years. In 2019, she began serving as a Miami-Dade County Court Judge and is now the Administrative Judge for the County Court Criminal Division.

In keeping with Mrs. Consuegra’s theme of "Joy" for the year, Judge Nuñez invited us to reflect on the acronym JOY: “Jesus is Over You.” She reminded us to pause and notice His presence not only in moments of challenge, but also in moments of joy, where He continually sends us messages of love and guidance along our journey.

Convocation set a meaningful and inspiring tone for the 2025–2026 school year, reminding us all of the gift of community and the joy of walking together in faith.
