Isabella Duarte-Crespo '25 and Veronica Franzino '27 recently participated in a Network Summer Service Project with other Sacred Heart students at St. Madeleine Sophie's Center (SMSC) in El Cajon, CA.
St. Madeleine Sophie's Center was founded by the Religious of the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1966 for preschool children with developmental disabilities. In 1972, SMSC transitioned its focus from preschool-aged children to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Through innovative programs, SMSC provides adult students with continued primary education, independent living skills, and pre-vocational training. Their mission has helped many students live fuller lives, earn an income, face obstacles, and make dreams a reality.
Here is what Isabella said about her experience serving the community at SMSC.
Originally, I was hesitant to come to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. Though I have a physical disability and a business called Hidden Innovations that's dedicated to advocating for disability rights, I’d never had experience with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Yet, the more I got to know the wonderful people at the center, the more I wished to stay with them. Every day I was greeted with smiles and lively conversations. I felt surrounded by a simplistic joy and utmost passion throughout the center. There was never a dull moment, and each new activity revealed how dedicated these lovely artists, dancers, swimmers, singers, and gardeners were to maintaining the uplifting atmosphere at St. Mad’s. The staff were incredibly patient while I was learning how to navigate the center, and their love for the students was palpable. I have never felt so fulfilled and joyful! I plan to return to St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center next summer to lead the new group of Sacred Heart Girls and volunteer on my own while I’m in college. I genuinely can’t recommend this service trip enough!
We are so proud of Isabella for her dedication to raising awareness for those who live with disabilities, and we are inspired by Isabella and Veronica's choice to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others this summer.
